Young Dems Summer BBQ

Thursday, July 30, 6-8 pm

People of all ages who want to socialize with local democrats are invited to attend. Burgers, hot-dogs and all the fixen's will be provided till we run out! Bring your own refreshments and snacks.

Meeting: February 17th

Tonights meeting we will be finishing up loose ends from the last meeting about the waterfront. It seems like the environmental impact topics were not well covered. Here are some links:

Waterfront Platform

This is from my notes for last tuesdays meeting, if I missed anything that we talked about, or you do not like the wording of any of the points please respond back. If it is missing something that was not brought up, we will discuss it at our next meeting, when we continue the discussion.

WCYD Bellingham Waterfront platform V1.0

That all beach areas be public property.
That a 100 foot setback exist, with a few exceptions granted on case per case basis
That separate bike lanes on major roads be built that connect to downtown and south bay trail
That there is full easily accessible disclosure on the state of all new development on the waterfront with regards to environmental concerns
That there be a mass transit line to the waterfront from the Bellingham metro station
That there be a a mix of housing built on the waterfront in regards to various income levels
That existing views from downtown be preserved via the street grid system, and building height caps.
That building height be capped at a reasonable level if near the water
That aesthetics be maintained via community standards for all building, with permits for buildings that follow the set standards being fast-tracked.
That room for office space be provided to ensure that well paying jobs be created
That large areas be set aside for parks
That the allowance of liquor licenses be increased for the town of Bellingham so that new waterfront businesses are not competing with existing ones for the previous allotment
That a vibrant nightlife be a goal of the waterfront which will lead economic growth
That there be ample secure bicycle parking
That there be an area for kayak use

New officers

On Tuesday December 2nd, the WCYD's held elections. The following officers will officially take office effective January 1st.

President: Andrew Lamb
Vice President: Jono Marion
Secretary: Jakob Lunden
Treasurer: Steve Rydman

The WCYD's have decided to make the position of webmaster an executive position. Mike Estes will continue in that role. The WCYD's have also decided to appoint an event coordinator. Filling that role will be Monica Gunderson.

Congratulations to all the new officers!

Mark Flanders responds to the Cascadia Weekly non-endorsment

Mark Flanders posted some background on how he thinks the Cascadia got a bad impression from him:

My mistake was a failure to recognize that we were not attending the same appointment. He was at a deposition of a political upstart, and I was at a “Let’s get to know each other” chat.
